At the beginning of the new school year, many international freshmen students have just become new members of Southwest Jiaotong University. Our university always attaches great importance to the mental health of international students, and is committed to creating a harmonious learning and living environment for them. On September 22, Mr. Weibao Fei, a teacher from the Psychological Research and Counseling Center gave a lecture in English on psychological adjustment for international students.
Mr. Fei first analyzed the possible psychological problems that foreign students may encounter. The psychological problems are usually caused by being away from homeland, cultural conflicts, language barriers, frustrations, and sense of insecurity. To help the international students achieve psychological adaptation and cope with possible challenges, Mr. Fei put forward some valuable suggestions. 1. Proactively overcome language barriers from four aspects: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. 2. Learn some knowledge of Chinese culture in order to overcome culture shock. 3. Improve their social skills and make friends in the context of Chinese culture. 4. Strengthen self-management. 5. Learn to relieve psychological stress and negative emotions. 6. Seek psychological counseling when necessary.
Then, Mr. Fei cited nine examples to illustrate how to relieve psychological stress. Many international students listened attentively and took notes. During the lecture, the atmosphere was lively, and all the international students were fascinated by Mr. Fei’s speech. We felt that Mr. Fei’s well-prepared lecture on psychological adjustment for international students would facilitate their adaptation to their college life in Southwest Jiaotong University.
At the end of the lecture, Mr. Fei sent his blessing to the international students, wishing them a happy and fruitful life in Southwest Jiaotong University.
