In order to broaden the students' international horizons, help them further expand their psychological knowledge and accumulate practical experience in world-class enterprises, the Psychological Research and Counseling Center of Southwest Jiaotong University launched a learning visit to Hong Kong with the theme of applied psychology. The study visit lasted for 8 days and mainly included four parts: university course study, famous enterprise practice, humanities survey and completion competition. The visiting team was composed of eight undergraduates, five postgraduates, with two teachers leading the team.
On August 19, 2018, the visiting team arrived in Shenzhen and was taken by a chartered bus to Hong Kong to check in at Y-Loft, Youth Plaza, Hong Kong.
On the morning of August 20th, the team experienced the "Dialogue in the Dark" activity. In complete darkness, vision was replaced by hearing, smell, taste and touch. Under the guidance of the docent, the team members overcame their anxiety and learned to appreciate the world from a brand new perspective in the dark.
The team took the applied psychology courses at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) for four afternoons from 20th to 23rd. The courses include four parts: clinical psychology, training on cognitive-behavioral therapy, consumer psychology, and the application of psychology in human resources. The course was taught by senior lecturers of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and small class teaching activities were conducted through semi-English teaching. Teachers and students actively interacted and communicated with each other, making the class lively and fascinating.
On the four mornings from 21st to 24th, the team visited AIA, a Fortune 500 company, to receive practical training and learn about Hong Kong's financial industry. During the visit, the team attended the risk planning lecture of AIA and the investment lecture by Berry Investment. Under the guidance of the enterprise tutor, each group completed a product release report and a complete set of financial plan report with a certain insurance product as the theme, and all the members of the best group received letters of recommendation.
On the afternoon of 24th, the team visited Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and was deeply impressed by its hi-tech vibe.
On the 25th, the team traveled on their own and went to Tai O Village, the oldest fishing village in Hong Kong, to experience the delicious food and beautiful scenery of the Hong Kong fishing village.
On the 26th, after a brief respite, the team members packed their bags and left Hong Kong feeling fulfilled.
The trip to Hong Kong has enhanced the students’ knowledge of psychology and introduced them to financial management. They not only participated in the intense completion competition, but also enjoyed delicious foods and beautiful scenery. Through classroom learning and the completion competition, the team members have gained rich knowledge in a short period of time, and had wonderful memories of team work and a rare experience of visiting Hong Kong together.
