On the evening of October 14, Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the Second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference via video and delivered a keynote speech entitled "Interconnect with the World and Connect with the Times While Striding Forward on the Road of Sustainable Development". He put forward important initiatives, announced pragmatic measures, and injected strong momentum for promoting the development of global sustainable transportation.
The Psychological Research and Counseling Center (PRCC) of Southwest Jiaotong University organized teachers and students to study the spirit of President Xi Jinping's keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference and the teachers and students felt greatly encouraged and exhilarated. As an independent secondary teaching and research unit of southwest Jiaotong University, PRCC is also responsible for the school’s mental health education, teaching, and psychological counseling. Standing at a new historical intersection, PRCC will further enhance the cross-integration of applied psychology with traffic and transportation, making its due contribution to the sustainable development of China’s industry of traffic and transportation.
Associate Professor Lei Ming, PRCC’s deputy director:
Let rail transit have "wisdom" and "mind"
From the perspective of the human community, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that transportation is the backbone of the economy and the bond of civilization. The exchanges of people and goods and the spread of civilization all need to be realized through safe transportation. This requires the research of traffic psychological phenomena and revealing the laws of traffic psychology. Only with safe transportation can we realize the sustainable development of traffic and transportation.
Our country has built the world's largest high-speed railway network, and the "software" construction should also take advantage of the momentum. We should have an interdisciplinary vision, promote the "software" construction of rail transit, promote interdisciplinary integration, and build our country into a transportation power. To advance the "double first-class" construction of our university, we have paid great attention to the research, application and transformation of traffic psychology and traffic mental health service.
On the road of advancing the high-quality co-construction of the “Belt and Road” program and promoting the sustainable development of transportation, the study of transportation psychology is promising. We should carry out research on the safety design of vehicles (operating platform design, ergonomic design of seats and cabins, etc.), driving safety, and the psychological laws of participants in order to enable rail transit to meet people's psychological needs and help turn the major transportation country to a strong transportation country.
Associate Professor Li Qiming from PRCC: Green and civilized travel promotes physical and mental health
The keynote speech delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping at the opening ceremony of the Second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference emphasized that we should insist on giving priority to ecology and live a green and low carbon life. Establishing a green and low-carbon economic system and promoting a comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development is the long-term strategy for achieving sustainable development. It is necessary to accelerate the formation of green and low-carbon transportation methods, strengthen the construction of green infrastructure, promote new energy, intelligent, digital, and lightweight transportation equipment, encourage and guide green travel, and make transportation more environment-friendly. We should make use of the disciplinary advantages of our Psychological Research and Counseling Center to actively carry out research on the intersection of traffic and psychology, such as traffic safety psychology, traffic engineering psychology, and traffic mental health. At the same time, we can integrate the concept of "green travel and civilized travel" into college students’ mental health education.
Lecturer Feng Guo from PRCC: "Human factors" can facilitate transportation and we psychologists should play our role.
As a psychologist and a member of Southwest Jiaotong University, I should also study in depth and give full play to the professional characteristics of psychology, and actively implement the spirit of the keynote speech of the general secretary at the Global Sustainable Transport Conference. The general secretary pointed out: To strengthen the "hard connectivity" of infrastructure, it is also necessary to implement the "soft connectivity" of systems and rules to promote the "four in one" interconnection of land, sea, sky, and the Internet; adhere to common development and promote fairness and inclusiveness. These goals not only open up broader prospects for the common development of mankind, but also require all of us to actively participate and make our contribution.
Therefore, in the process of establishing “China’s International Sustainable Transport Innovation and Knowledge Center” and building “green transportation and smart transportation”, we should consider further including more “human” factors, which may include: (1) The use of interdisciplinary theories and methods and more research on the interrelationships between people, machines and their working environment. (2) Pay attention to the participation characteristics of "people". (3) "Industrial transformation, digital economy, artificial intelligence and other new technologies and new business formats" have promoted the emergence of new things such as smart transportation and autonomous driving.
Lecturer Yang Rui from PRCC: Integrate traffic and psychology to answer the big proposition of the times
General Secretary Xi Jinping's speech at the Second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference emphasized our country's responsibility for global governance and development, as well as the mission of leading transportation and its responsibility as a major transportation country. I studied the full text of General Secretary Xi's speech in depth and felt very excited. General Secretary Xi explained from five aspects the principles that our country should adhere to in the development of transportation.
Southwest Jiaotong University, as a university with traffic and transportation as its advantages and teaching and research in transportation and related fields as its own responsibility, has made outstanding contributions to the country and the world's community of human destiny. As a member of Southwest Jiaotong University, I take pride in my role and will therefore assume my responsibility.
General Secretary Xi Jinping mentioned that transportation is the backbone of the economy and the bond of civilization. As a psychology research and teaching worker at Southwest Jiaotong University, I should think more about how to play the role of cultural bonds in transportation. Through transportation, we realize "connectivity" and "communication" with the world——discovering the social and psychological propositions in "traffic, connectivity and communication".
