近日，高雪梅教授团队在美国心理学会会刊《Psychology of Popular Media》（JCR一区，IF5=2.6）在线发表研究论文“Problematic Social Media Use Increases With Fear of Missing Out Among Young Adults: A Three-Wave Longitudinal Study”，并受美国心理学会邀请，在其合作的Kudos网站进行专栏科普，从自我控制的视角深入探讨了错失恐惧如何影响问题性社交媒体使用。
研究采用纵向追踪设计，通过对520名大学生在三个时间点（每3个月一次）的追踪调查，首次探究了错失恐惧、社交媒体自我控制失败和问题性社交媒体使用的关系，并使用多水平纵向中介模型来区分个体间（即在特定的时间点）和个体内（即跨不同的时间点）两个水平，也就是说，在构建的多水平模型中，每个被试都是自己的控制变量，且个体内的效应不会受到个体间效应的混淆 (Hoffman & Stawski, 2009; Nie et al., 2019)。

结果显示，无论是特质错失恐惧（trait-FoMO）还是状态错失恐惧（state-FoMO），均能直接、间接通过社交媒体自我控制失败显著正向影响问题性社交媒体使用。具体来说，在个体间水平，错失恐惧水平较高的群体会报告更多的社交媒体自我控制失败，进而具有更高的问题性社交媒体使用风险；在个体内水平，随着时间的推移，错失恐惧水平较高的个体会报告更多的社交媒体自我控制失败，从而表现出更高的问题性社交媒体使用风险。
